Are Calls Secure & Encrypted?

Can you clarify if voice calls are encrypted and "NSA-proof"? Are the calls done device-to-device or do the calls route through a server? Ususally encrypted voice apps have both users confirm a code on screen (e.g. Ab39) to confirm that both parties see the same code and the call is secure. Just wondering why Bleep doesn't have both parties confirm a code on screen?
