vpn and Wi-Fi?

I rent a room in a house where the landlord provides free wifi via her cable connection, broadband and router. I would like be able to use bittorrent at home without the landlord's cable provider harassing her. If I have a vpn account such as through Strong VPN etc, will I be able to use bittorrent over her wifi without her cable provider seeing it...?
