phantomofthetorrent
Greetings all! First post here so I hope I am in the right place. I occasionally have cause to use torrent downloads and I've noticed that I am sometimes able to download a torrent even when--according to the client I am using--no one is seeding. Since there is no one seeding and torrents are a peer to peer exchange protocol, where is that file coming from? Many thanks.
Harold Feit
The .torrent file is metadata and can be exchanged independently of the client. The original torrent was made and was likely seeded at one time.
phantomofthetorrent
I see. So once it was seeded it just sort of stays out there in "cyberparts unknown" then?
Harold Feit
Seeding happens by either the person who made the torrent or people who downloaded it. In the case of torrents that won't complete, they are no longer seeded.
