Dale V
I am attempting to download a torrent that shows over 100 peers and several seeds but nothing is happening (other torrents are downloading fine). When I go to the trackers list, the status of DHT, Local Peer Discovery, and Peer Exchange all say "not allowed". I am also not able to select these trackers from my preferences. What is happening here?
Harold Feit
Nothing is misbehaving based on that. The torrent is private flagged. DHT, Peer Exchange and Local Peer Discovery are supposed to be disabled because of that flag.
Dale V
I didn't know torrents could be private. I assume, knowing this, that the authorized users must share a password of some kind that the original uploader has provided (is this correct?). Is it possible to know who originally created the torrent and subsequently contact them?
Harold Feit
No. There's a flag in the .torrent file itself that causes Bittorrent to disable DHT, Peer Exchange and Local Peer Discovery.
Dale V
Me again. It is interesting, however, that I was able to download about 60% of the torrent in question. If it is a private/flagged torrent, how was I able to do this? I noticed that other trackers were also listed. Can one tell that a torrent is flagged (other than the 'not authorized' message)? Harold Feit
Looking inside the .torrent file with a bencode viewer such as torrentspy can show you the private flag. But that's it.
Dale V
Harold, thanks for the advice (I'm learning!). But as of now and since I began this topic post, my Bittorrent no longer works. Please see my recent post on Bittorrent crashing and help me there if you can.
